Breaking: Russia’s Kanaeva wins 2nd rhythmic gymnastics gold
Today (August 10, 2012, Friday) Google is featuring “Rhythmic Gymnastics” by showing the Doodle “London 2012 rhythmic gymnastics“. This event is taking place from Thursday 9 – Sunday 12 August.

This is the 16th Doodle for the London 2012 Summer Olympics.
See the below London 2012 rhythmic gymnastics Google Doodle video:
Rhythmic Gymnastics is a combination of gymnastics and dance. Rhythmic Gymnastics was introduced at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. A Group event was added to the programme at Atlanta 1996.
Individual competitors perform short routines to music using hand apparatus – a hoop, a ball, clubs and a ribbon. Groups perform two routines, one with five balls and the other with three ribbons and two hoops. Scores are awarded in three categories: difficulty, artistry and execution.

an interesting sidenote: Rhythmic Gymnastics is officially the only women-only sport in the Olympic Games. It’s clearly not the most pressing or hot-debated topic, but there definitely are two distinct sides to this.
